A client from here in Metairie, Louisiana, dropped into Prestige Car Audio and Marine to inquire about adding a subwoofer system to his 2016 Jeep Renegade. We showed the client a few options for subwoofer enclosures with only a mediocre response. The client was not interested in losing any cargo space. As soon as we heard this, we knew exactly what to do. We took some quick measurements, made some calculations and offered the client a unique and custom solution. He loved the plan, so we scheduled an appointment to get started on this Renegade bass upgrade project.
Subwoofer Enclosure
To keep the rear storage of the Renegade usable, we removed the spare tire from the vehicle. With the tire aside, we were able to start construction on a new enclosure that would fit entirely under the trunk floor. Using an outside template of a JL Audio 10TW3 shallow subwoofer, we used our router to cut a recess into the top of the enclosure. We used several spacers to move the mounting surface for the sub down about two inches from the top so that the sub would always be protected. Once all the construction and test-fitting was complete, we finished the enclosure in black automotive carpet.
Amplifier
To power the subwoofer, the client chose a JL Audio JX500/1D amplifier. This amplifier can produce up to 500 watts of power into the 2-ohm load that the 10TW3 subwoofer presents. As with all of our installations, we protected all the wiring for the amp with tesa automotive cloth tape.
Air Compressor

Our team added an air compressor to the false-floor to provide emergency assistance.
As we had removed the spare tire from the little truck, we wanted to ensure the client would have a way of getting around in the event he had a flat tire. We fitted a small air compressor in the back left corner of the area under the floor. In the event the client needs to pump up the tires, he’s ready to go!
Renegade Bass Upgrade Tuning

We tested the integration of the bass with the factory audio system to ensure maximum fidelity.
Once we completed fabrication, we spent some time dialing in the subwoofer system. We always make sure that the subwoofer is working with the front and rear speakers to provide a smooth transition between the two. Some quick RTA measurements confirmed that our wiring was correct. We finished with a listening test to make sure there were no buzzes or rattles. Everything was perfect, so it was time to call the client.
The client was anxious to have a listen to his new system. He could not believe that a single 10-inch subwoofer could produce such clean and clear bass. If your car or truck needs more bass, drop by the store or contact us here.
