A client from Metairie contacted Prestige Car Audio & Marine recently about adding a custom-installed laser and radar detector to his 2016 Mercedes GL63 AMG. We invited him to stop by our facility so we could get to know him better and look over the vehicle. After meeting with the client, we worked up a proposal that he liked, so we set a time to begin work on his Mercedes.
Laser And Radar Protection By Escort
For this vehicle, we chose an Escort 9500ci system, which comes with a front radar receiver and a pair of laser shifters. We hid the radar sensor completely behind the front fascia of the vehicle in a spot that still allowed for optimum performance. We mounted the laser shifters in an opening in the lower grille in strategic locations, aimed perfectly at the road ahead.

The client is alerted of laser shifter activity through his instrument cluster.
Since laser is a beam of light, proper shifter mounting is critical if you want good performance. The Escort pieces do a great job of helping you avoid a ticket against laser. When laser is fired at the vehicle and the shifters sense it, they immediately fire back powerful beams of light that prevent the laser gun from getting a reading on your vehicle. This gives you precious time to slow down and avoid a ticket.

It should be noted that all connections made by Prestige are soldered with protective heat-shrink, and we loom and properly secure all wiring to allow easy servicing in the future.
Escort Display Integration
At this point, we turned our attention to the inside of the vehicle. The Escort 9500ci comes with an external display and a controller and, in normal circumstances, we would install both. In this GL63 AMG, we installed an integration module that displayed the radar information in the driver information center, making it look factory-installed. To make things even better, the driver can use the steering wheel controls to alter settings while driving. We hid the Escort controller in a spot that was easily accessible, to allow for programming functions of the system.
We also installed a speaker in the vehicle in a completely hidden spot that still allowed the driver to easily hear audible prompts of any alert or changes he makes in the detector’s settings.

Once the installation was complete, our team performed a detailed check-out procedure to ensure the system is performing at its best and confirming the vehicle is in perfect working order.
