A client from Mandeville came to Prestige Car Audio & Marine in New Orleans with his beautiful 1973 BMW 2002. If you follow classic cars, then you already know that the value on 2002s has blown up. They have skyrocketed in value over the last several years. That is great news if you are the fortunate person to own one, but bad news if you want a modern stereo system. Why?

Well, in simple terms, the dash of this vehicle was never designed to hold a modern stereo system and, if you modify it to hold one, the value of the vehicle drops. Would you like to guess how hard it is to find an original console for this vehicle, in case you do want to modify it? Or even how much it is going to cost? It is going to sting a little.

Hidden from sight under the rear seat is the new Sony radio.

With the rear seat in place, the car once again looks completely stock, but this time with much better audio!

In this vehicle, the upgrade is centered around the Sony MEX-XB100BT stereo system. In a modern vehicle, we would just install this great piece of equipment in the dash. Since that was not possible, we opted to hide it under the back seat. We did what? Yep, we hid it under the back seat. You probably think we have lost our minds, but fear not, we had a plan.

SongPal App Gives Complete Radio Control From Smartphone

The SongPal smartphone app gives the client complete control of the hidden Sony radio.

Sony has a free app available for an iPhone or Android phone called SongPal. It allows the client to use a phone to completely control the Sony unit over Bluetooth. He can control volume, Bluetooth streaming of music, disc control, USB media and the radio directly from the app. How cool is that? To make things even better, the MEX-XB100BT comes with a real amplifier inside it, not the wimpy so-called amp in a normal stereo system. This thing puts out an honest 40 watts per channel, so it really jams.

OEM Radio Keeps The BNMW 2002 Interior Looking Stock

We made sure the OEM radio had power so it could light up and look the part in this 2002.

Other than the period correct Nardi steering wheel upgrade and the Recaro seat addition, this 2002 retains it stock interior looks.

To make the whole package even more unbelievable, we kept the original BMW radio installed in the dash, and it turns on and lights up.
