Clients bring their vehicles to Prestige Car & Marine for amazing audio system upgrades. One of the ways we make our customers’ cars sound amazing is by including a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) in the design of their system. Having a DSP gives us incredible control over each speaker’s audio signal. Let’s look at a few of the key features of a DSP and how it improves the performance of a mobile audio system.
Crossovers
Being able to limit the range of frequencies each speaker “sees” is very important. A small midrange speaker or a tweeter won’t want to see large amounts of bass. At the same time, subwoofers don’t do a very good job of reproducing midrange and high frequencies. DSPs allow us to set the crossover frequency very accurately. We can also adjust the crossover slope to help extend low-frequency response without risking damage to speakers.
Time Alignment
Because we sit at different distances from the left and right speakers, we hear the sound from the closest speaker before the other. This imbalance ruins the perception of where the music is coming from on the dash. With some tuning, we can spread the sound out evenly across the dash. Done properly, you can hear each and every instrument and performer separately from each other. It’s an amazing experience!
Equalization
A car is a real challenge when it comes to sound reflections. Glass, plastic, leather – all in different shapes and at a different angle make a mess out of the frequency response you hear from your speakers. We use a DSP to undo those challenges. We measure the frequency response at the listening position and smooth out the peaks and valleys. Smooth frequency response makes your music sound natural and realistic.
Fine Level Control
An often over-looked feature of modern DSPs is their ability to adjust different output levels very accurately. We use fine-level adjustment to compensate for speakers with different efficiencies, and for different distances between your speakers and the listening position. Level setting is key to our goal of creating a natural and realistic listening experience in your car.
OEM Integration
Many of the DSPs we sell are designed to assist with installing premium audio systems in vehicles where the factory radio cannot be replaced. These processors can undo factory time alignment and equalization. The result is a smooth, flat frequency response signal to build on. We can create an amazing system using the factory source unit.
